The Power of Smart Plugs
Smart plugs, such as the TP-Link Tapo plugs that we use, offer a gateway to enhanced energy management and efficiency. These intelligent devices enable users to monitor and control the energy consumption of various appliances and devices, thereby optimising their usage patterns. The integration of smart plugs into everyday routines presents a multitude of benefits, ranging from cost savings to environmental impact reduction.
We gave one our hospitality clients a load of smart plugs to use on their beverage fridges, freezers, and ice machines. We are monitoring the consumption of these devices across multiple sites and over 180 smart plugs.
Leveraging Energy Monitoring Capabilities
The TP-Link Tapo smart plugs allow us to track the device’s consumption from afar. We have integrated the data from the Tapo app with our own database, allowing us to analyse and report the data to the client. With an understanding of their power usage habits, our client is empowered to make informed decisions about their practices with these devices.
Over the 180 plugs we are monitoring, we have calculated the runtime of each device and their projected annual consumption. Some devices were functioning almost 100% of the time, consuming every minute of the day.

Remote Control and Automation
One of the key advantages of smart plugs is their ability to enable remote control and automation of devices. Whether it's scheduling the operation of appliances to align with specific times of the day or remotely managing devices from anywhere via a smartphone, the convenience and flexibility offered by smart plugs contribute to a more streamlined and efficient energy management process.
After gathering data and analysing consumption patterns, we were able to remotely implement schedules on all suitable appliances, limiting their runtime and cutting their consumption. We calculated that these devices were consuming over 102,000 kWh a year and projected that with the new schedules implemented they would save over £28,000 a year.
